Locking the Outboard Straight for Rudder Steering

Modified on Tue, 22 Apr at 7:35 AM

If you’re using your Blade Outboard on a sailboat and prefer to steer using only your rudder, you can lock the motor in the straight-ahead position using the transom mount locking adapter (sold separately).

What It Does

This adapter fixes the outboard in place so it won’t rotate, allowing consistent forward thrust while steering with your rudder.

Installation Steps

  1. Align the Outboard
Turn the motor so it’s pointing straight ahead.

  2. Position the Adapter
Place the locking adapter on top of the transom mount. Make sure it sits flush and centered.

  3. Insert the Screws
Use the four provided M4 Phillips-head screws to secure the adapter in place. Tighten evenly in a cross pattern.

  4. Secure the Fit
Check that the outboard is firmly locked in position. It should not swivel side to side.

Note: For long-term or semi-permanent installations, you may apply a medium-strength thread locker to the screws to prevent loosening over time.

Maintenance

  • Re-check screw tightness occasionally, especially after rough use.

  • Rinse with fresh water after saltwater exposure.

  • Inspect adapter and mount regularly for wear or corrosion.

⚠️ Safety & Installation Notes

  • Avoid Pinching: Keep fingers clear of the adapter and mount area during installation.

  • Do Not Overtorque: Screws can break under excessive force. Tighten by hand until snug — do not force.

  • Prevent Cross-Threading: Start all screws gently by hand to ensure proper alignment before tightening.

  • Thread Locker (Optional): For semi-permanent installs, you may use a medium-strength thread locker to help prevent loosening over time.
